Week 3 (Thumbnails) - Dani McCole

opened 4 and 6 more

I had a few concepts from over the years-- some were revamped thumbnails from older assignments, others characters I've created for fun and personal projects.

I had these characters that I made really quick last term during Jeong's class to help with a weapon design project, so I thought I'd save them from just gathering dust in the depths of my hard drive. They're a play on Little Bo Peep and Babe, because who doesn't love a shepherding pig move, really?

I'm really unsure what to do with the background in B, which is a shame because I quite like the action and the character interaction in it. Maybe a graphic solution is the way to go for that one?

Oh, and before i forget AGAIN, thanks for all the feedback on the other wips, it's all been really helpful stuff.

Create a Character Poster ( Game, movie, tv show poster etc  )

Choose one character previously done in the past class exercises or homework assignments, or designed in the character design class, and make a Poster.

Level of finish: Same as DeathRace Pilot image. Rough colors. No need of fully rendered image.

Portrait Format Please !!

Examples of finish levels in case you forgot :

Examples of posters :

So here are some examples of movie posters, some have full character on it, some are cropped, some are almost zooming in on the head, some characters are super far, some are graphic.....
Many directions are available to you. It is your choice. Make a decision, take action. Be creative ! Take control.

Don't expect clients to do that for you. Imagine tomorrow i hire you and you need me to follow you around explaining to you everything that needs to be done every step if the way. I will probably brief you this way: hey ! We need a kickass poster for the game ! With the hero in it and add some sort of background! Make sure it has some BOOM BOOM POW. You have until next wednesday !

......thats it.

PS: Boom boom pow ? True story.

Steps by Steps: Here are some step by steps. I believe that we learn by doing, so you need to pratice really hard. If you are still having trouble starting up an image, choosing a composition, and framing...you need to practice much more. And do more sketches. Looking at steps by steps and tutorials is ok, but doing them is the thing that will get you places.

Remember this ? I showed it to you in week 2. Gerald Pareil

This one of mine : That i've showned you already.

Step 1: crappy sketch for you
Step 2 : choose one and clean it up
Step 3 : add BW values or straight up to color if you can.
Step 4:  Rough painting ( you guys could stop here, just add some punch with FX or particles and stuff, but no more render is ok on step 4)

Step 5 : if you are capable of, start cleaning up your image.

Step 6 : Add finishing touches, FX and what not etc...

With the post on composition and the examples you have everything you need to create an image. Now its up to you to put in the mileage and the hours and practice like crazy. Else its pointless.

Even so, since i see some of you are nervous about starting an image and need reassurance, instead of correcting a homework and talking about various topics on the blog, during this next week, i will prepare a new step by step, and we will check it during class.

I also uploaded a cropped version cause I feel it's more dynamic and prefer it over the other one.

Week 2 - Dani McCole

Was super conflicted on which comp to use. I went with this one because it had the most "attitude."  However I'm not sure if it were still the best choice as an overall comp.
