Week 01 Feedback for Rajdeep BW Sketch

Week 01 Feedback for Rajdeep, Black and white WIP

Hey Rajdeep,
Not much to say here. Pretty solid.

Values seem to work.

-Make sure we can read the props, right now the ones on the left seem to fade out and merge with the rest of the image.
-I can see you used refs for the apprentice and that's why it is believable. Compared to the master behind that doesnt work because it is done without references. Make sure you take a picture to see how hands work when resting on a shoulder.
-The design of the apprentice is too bland though. His clothing needs more work, since you seem to have some indian or south east asian props in the picture, well guess how the costume should be ?
-His head should be more interesting, add tattoos if you are going for the bald look. Tattoos shoul dbe the same culture and design of the props and costume.

I rechecked this and added more feedback. Actually your values could pop more:

-More contrast on face and hand area.
-I changed the values of the props as suggested and add darker values on BG.
-Check the set up of  the props on the left, if you change it and create overlap and enlarge the grinding bowl, it becomes more interesting.

I'll explain tomorrow, one on one.

COntinue with the final image,

Week 1 - Rajdeep Choudhury

Still undecided about whether to put the Sorcerer behind him with hand on shoulder.

Week 01 Feedback for Beth Sparks BW Sketch

Week 01 Feedback for Beth Sparks, Black and white WIP

Hey Beth,

So, you guys will hear me say this a lot, you need to make sure you know your anatomy and where you are going with it. It is ok to be stylised but you need to make sure that it is solid.

Here the anatomy and the dress are a bit all over the place.
-Make sure you draw the body and then draw the clothes on it.
-Hands were really weak here.
-Face needs to be drawn better

-Design of the shadown creature is lacking. So is it's posing. It seems very stiff.

-Background is just a wall, without anything cool or nothing to bring to the picture and the perspective is way off.
Need to work on that more. Even if your characters were great, a bad background or prop can bring your image down.

Try to solve these issues on your own, and proceed to the final. After you submit the final, i will show you what  i would have done. But for now i want you to try to figure this out by yourself.

Week 01 Feedback for Elkhan Kildibekov BW Sketch

Week 01 Feedback for Elkhan Kildibekov, Black and white WIP

Hey Elkan,

Not much going on in comparison to the sketch you did in class. So :

1-Where are your values?
2-Where are the light sources coming from ?
3-You haven't designed the costume or any other prop in the image.

Usually in a professional environment, you wouldn't show this type of sketch, it needs a bit more clarification in all the areas mentioned above.

Like we said in class:
-pull back the camera
-make sure we can see the arm on the right.
-The hand on the right is almost side view, it has to be a 3/4 perspective
-The hand on the left is too small, and make sure you have a good ref for both, because hands and faces are the things most looked at in a character. So they need to be great.
-The costume as of now, is really not defined, so make sure you know whats going on underneath so you can place the folds accordingly. Folds need to be great too. They can kill your image if they are not well done.
-The window behind the head, will attract too much attention, and its i suppose the secondary ight source. So maybe placing it off camera would be a better solution than to have it attracting the eye of the viewer.

If you jump in to paint or polish an image that still needs design clarification.... You will be in a lot of trouble. Because you will have to solve the drawing, the values, the lights, the designs and the color and paint.... at the same time. It will come back and bite you in the arse.

Either way, you are running out of time, so jump in to the final image from here. Let's see your final version.
