Week 3 - Lena Labonte

  1. Nice save Lena.

This is a very ambitious image.

Seeing the second verion i would have pushed the Film Noir Genre even more. Making it black and white with stark and strong shadows, graphical shapes and a dash of red here and there.

When working on an image with a big environment presence, the BG has to be really worked on. It becomes a big star of the image. And this is where references come into play. Crazy urban settings such as HongKong come to mind. Films like Bladerunner ( the FIRST one obviously) etc etc.You have to work on your set dressing. The floor, debris, trash, puddles...The walls, more posters, tags and street art, like in NYC. The BG, crazy buildings, cool shapes again NYC is a great ref.

Great progress since week one though. COntinue pushing your foundation skills, drawing, composition, and lighting. How light works. Also do a heavier reference research when doing work like this. I would search for New York back alley, or Hong Kong back Alley. Then Street art to see examples and create my own for the walls. Street posters in new york. Shop signs etc, then search for new york street again because it will give you a larger view of a main street with buildings in the far back. Then if you have air conditioner units on the walls, and you need refs for them, search for that separately etc etc. No need of ten per topic, just 3 that represent what you need.
Then search for color and light refs, so nyc street at night, or whatever city that inspires you. So you can see the colors and light and try to understand whats going on.

That will really help out your work.
